I loved the TV show. When I read the books, those girls were who I pictured as the charactors. The movie- ugh! The girls in it were more cartoonish and I didn't like all the melodrama and how it took itself so seriously. Movie Kristy was way too whiny for Kristy. I don't like Claudia much anyways, so neither Claudia made much of an impression on me, but all movie Claudia did was complain. I really don't think Mallory in the books dressed like Mallory in the movie. Tv Kristy was perfect. Even though TV Mary Anne was so tall, she always seemed sincere. She was the way I wished she was in the books, since I didn't care much for her passive/aggressive streak in the books. (Side note: Meghan Lahey, TV Mary Anne, was a guidance counselor at my little cousin's school. My cousin saw her in the hallway sometimes and said she seemed sweet. I showed my cousin my "Mary Anne and the Brunettes" tape. She didn't know she was an actress and found it strange watching her in it TV Stacey seemed less snobbish than she did in the books, especially in the Robert ones. TV Dawn fit the books description well looks and personality wise, and Melissa Chasse was actually younger in real life than she looked. Dawn was my favorite sitter in the books and I thought the TV one played it well. No opinion on TV Mallory and Jessi. I didn't dislike them though. Logan bored me, as he did in the books. There should be a thread for the actors who played the kids they sat for.

I Googled Meghan and it looks like she's now working at an educational consulting firm. www.steinbrecherconsulting.com/who.htmlScroll to the bottom and you'll see her. She even got her hair cut short just like book Mary Anne!

I decided to watch all the videos I have one more time and then give them to the thrift store. (The old VCR is only going to last so long.) So far they have made it from the back of my closet to the floor right outside of my closet door. I will definitely be taking notes on all the awesomeness if I can ever get around to watching them.

Random observations after watching a bunch of these.
The girls spy a lot. And they’re really bad at it.
Stacey and Dawn have the most screen time in practically every episode. I know Stacey was the most popular character, but who knew Dawn was up there too?
The girls almost always sit in pairs but rarely sit for more than 3 kids at a time.
Mallory went through at least three different pairs of glasses. Who knew she was so stylish? She started out with a red Sally Jessi Raphael pair, then a clear plastic pair (to match her braces?) and finally got a fairly decent (for 1992) metal framed pair. Claudia’s phone also changed color at least once. This show was so low budget, you’d think they would hold on to their props better.
The kid kit (I’m pretty sure they used the same one for all the girls) looked like a giant tote bag made out of a burlap sack.
Claudia wore big, fun, dangle earrings all the time, but beyond that they were all fairly equal on the style meter. Nobody was cutting edge. Claudia, Stacey, and Jessi wore the brightest colors. Kristy and Mallory dressed pretty much the same, jeans and big sweatshirts. Mary Anne wore some huge jumpers and overalls. Dawn was somewhere between Kristy/Mal and Mary Anne, but she did rock a denim shirt once, lol. Overall I would say Mary Anne had the ugliest wardrobe.

^ Bwahahaha. I liked all of your notes and I'm impressed by some of your observations (i.e. Mallory's glasses).
I just finished watching Dawn and the Haunted House, which starred Stacey and Dawn for the most part -- with Claudia as a secondary plot -- so I see what you mean about the Stacey/Dawn thing.
Also, if anyone is interested, someone just posted a few more of the TV episodes on YouTube! I hope people check them out/watch them and it causes more discussion on here!

^I think I watched them all in a row, or in one weekend, so I picked up on the differences easier. For some reason as soon as I'm done watching these shows they immediately leave my brain. I bet I've seen each episode 3-4 times, but I only remember basic plot points and maybe a detail here or there.

That makes no sense considering Kristy has braces in a few episodes!
As I'm watching I'm noticing that Dawn doesn't come across as very "self-assured" and the ones with the most poise seem to be Stacey, Claudia, and Mary Anne. I like Dawn though, she is cute and smiley. Love Mal too.

I've been watching a bunch of these on Netflix, and then trying to find the filming locations on Google Maps. I found the school they used for establishing shots of SMS. It's actually an elementary school. I feel a little like a country bumpkin because I've never seen an elementary school that big in my life, lol. It's at 325 Tenafly Road in Englewood, New Jersey.

Agreed that Kristy was the best portrayed (a lot of energy and leadership without being too bossy) but I also liked Logan Bruno and Janine; I initially thought Mary Anne was too pretty and tall but the portrayal really grew on me. It was also interesting that Alan was basically more mature and nice than in the books. Stacey was the most disappointing. I would have also liked to have seen more of the Brewers, the Krushers, Richard and Sharon and the Pikes.

I found the TV show on Hulu and had a mental breakdown due to the excitement and shock haha. I liked the movie WAY better, though (which is also on Hulu!). But the TV show is actually pretty good - really cute and sweet and fun and HILARIOUS! I think Kristy and Mallory and Dawn looked like their characters the most accurate. Stacey doesn't look like as I imagined (movie Stacey is very accurate), MA is way too tall (like 5'10 or something!) and she has blue eyes and she has bangs, Jessi is too short (isn't she supposed to be tall for her age?), and Claudia doesn't look Asian to me (half Asian and half European or American, I think?). Their personalities and wardrobes are spot on, though! The episodes are fun and funny and very entertaining. My favorite episodes are MA and the Brunettes, Claudia and the Mystery of the Secret Passage, Dawn and the Dream Boy (or is it the Perfect Boy?), Dawn and the Haunted House, Stacey's Big Break, Stacey Takes a Stand, the Babysitters and the Boy Sitters, the Babysitters Special Christmas, and Babysitters Remember . I know, a lot of favorite episodes haha. I just love the TV show so much despite its inconsistencies and flaws and poor acting and low budget!

So I'm catching up on the videos, and was just watching Jessi and the Stolen Secrets, when I noticed something funny. In the scene at the library when Jessi and Mal are hiding behind some books, those books looked like BSC books. The quality of the video was a bit blurry, so I wasn't sure. Did anyone else notice that? This is what I'm going to do during the weekend

Anyone know what years they filmed these? According to IMDb and wikipedia the episodes all aired for the first time in a 3 month window on HBO at the beginning of 1990. You can tell though that a lot longer than 3 months passes between ep 1 and ep 13. Mallory is 6 to 12" taller and other girls look older too.

I finished watching the whole series again. I really enjoyed it this time around. Dare I say I liked it more than the Netflix series? I think I did. The vibe of this matches the books so well. The girls were always babysitting and/or hanging out in a group. It was very much like they were just hanging out with their younger friends (mostly Jackie and Charlotte). The Netflix show did so little with the babysitting part of their lives. The movie is dead last in likability to me.
