Gosh - I am to this book in my reread of the series and I really do miss the characters as they were in the beginning. I don't Kristy would have put up with that guy for as long as she did back then.
On to Abby, I have to appreciate that Abby tries to make things fun, but I did not like the making fun of people part. It just isn't endearing to me to make fun of people and do impersonations esp if they are not nice impersonations. I like many of you really liked Anna better than Abby in this book. I don't think that this book was a good first impression of Abby.
I did like that Kristy seemed somewhat vulnerable in wondering how Abby how come in so quickly and knew the popular guys etc. It made me realize that she does care what other people thinks and maybe even wants to be in the in crowd (or at least noticed by them).
I did think the diaper jokes were funny but really Kristy should have found out what "sponsor" actually meant to him. I am surprised at the end that Watson didn't foot the bill for uniforms and equipment b/c he was so proud of Kristy for standing up for herself etc.

I know very well that Stoneybrook is the land of minimal (if any) parental involvement with their kids' lives. I would like to think Watson and Elizabeth would have contacted Mr. Davis before Kristy agreed to his offer, to check him out and also unlike Kristy, find out the specifics. That said, if Mr. Davis was suddenly going to be an active coach, wouldn't the Krushers parents want to meet him? I think that was one of the worst (non mystery) examples of bad parenting in the books. More later when I have finished. This was the book on my last re-read and made me go back to the beginning. It's very tempting to do that now but will just "finish." Can always start over.

I did like that Kristy seemed somewhat vulnerable in wondering how Abby how come in so quickly and knew the popular guys etc. It made me realize that she does care what other people thinks and maybe even wants to be in the in crowd (or at least noticed by them). i have always gotten this feeling from kristy. she looks down on anyone and everyone who isn't part of her group, and i feel like that is compensating for the fact that she isn't part of the "popular crowd." like if she can't be part of their crowd, they can't be part of hers. i don't think she wants to do all the other things the popular kids do (like the clothes and makeup and boys), but she loves recognition. the fact that watson didn't sponsor the krushers is even more confusing to me, considering he sponsors kids at jessi's dance school. if i were kristy i would definitely mention that to him.

^I forgot all about Watson randomly sponsoring the dance school scholarships. Wait, maybe that was because those kids were never heard from again! I actually thought the three kids, I forgot their names, just remember one was named Martha and the other a boy who thought he was "too cool for dance school" at the beginning, were the most interesting part of any Mme Noelle related scenes. As far as Watson sponsoring the Krushers, I agree that in light of one (dance) he certainly should have offerred to do the same for the Krushers. I have always wished he and Kristy had (to our knowledge) worked more closely together on the team. However, I admit to being glad he didn't sponsor. Part of what I loved so much about the early books and (early) Krushers, or the idea of them anyway, was that they were simple yet endearing. Unlike encounters with cat burglars or embezzlers, the early plots could have happened anywhere in "real life" to girls of the same age. The Krushers allowed us a closer glimpse into Kristy's life along with her players making all of them much more genuine and real. If Watson had ever sponsored them (and they suddenly gained fame and/or notoriety) the team might have moved in the direction of the later books into the land of weird happenings and cariacture characters.

actually i really like that simplicity too. it's what separated the krushers from the bashers, and especially little league.

Exactly. Good point about the Bashers. I still don't understand why they play for Bart, I have a sneaking suspicion that you are very right about their being more formal than the Krushers. Even though we never saw it, I could totally see at least one of their parents making a push for their kid to join little league and/or be a bad parent spectactor at a game. Maybe not, though and hopefully I'm wrong. I always wished there had been some follow-up with Chris, Joey, Patty, and any other Basher who was stranded at the "haunted" mansion. I think doing so would have made their team less rival and more real to us.

I just read this post on When Parents Text, and it made me think of this book.

Kristy and the Dirty Diapers. We get it, Scholastic. You want us to think that the book is about Kristy having to change a pile of baby's stinky diapers. But when really it's about the Krushers name chance to promote a diaper company. Good one. You almost pulled one over on us... almost

^I wonder how they could have made (literal) dirty diapers into a good story line.

Hmmm let's think about this one. One of the kids always has dirty diapers and Kristy finds an entire room full of dirty diapers like a hoarder episode. She of course saves the day by helping to clean up the room and the kid. The parents are ever so grateful and don't know how they have lived without the BSC!

How about Dawn has had it with the way Mrs. Barrett (DeWitt, take your pick) insists on buying plastic diapers for Marnie. She also secretly can't believe how it doesn't bother Kristy that her parents buy disposable disapers for Emily. Dawn's newest crusade is born as she becomes a spokeswoman for Davis Diapers. Hey, it'd get her out of CT!

I remember a friend of mine reading this in Grade 5 and then lending it to me. She later GAVE it to me when she outgrew the BSC (and I obviously didn't) and I thought it was such a huge deal. Anyway, I remember her telling me she read this in a few hours in one sitting and I was secretly jealous of her super speedy reading skills.
Funny how Abby and Anna were called Lucy and Ethel Ricardo in the manuscripts before the names were changed based on the contest results. Ann had some serious obsession.

This is one I definitely read when it came out. I remember it was the first book with the "new" cover!
At the time, Dawn was my favorite, so I wasn't too thrilled about her leaving for CA. I remember thinking there was nothing...unique about Abby. I really like the theory posed here that she's a combination of all of Kristy's annoying traits! Except Abby doesn't act like a dictator when she's in charge LOL.
I would have liked to see Anna join instead too. We already had a loudmouth athletic one in the BSC - there was never a music person in the club! Not counting Shannon, of course.
The main plot of this book was pretty forgettable. I keep forgetting the Krushers aren't in a league, so that struck me as odd that they would get sponsored. Drusilla's pep band was pretty stupid (then again, the Krushers had their own cheerleaders, so I'm not surprised they'd welcome a band too heh), but Drusilla won me over in the Little Sister book when she makes Karen think she's a witch.
